Westchester VITA Program

Westchester County is seeking volunteers for the 2012 Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program.  This program is designed to help eligible low-income Westchester residents receive State and Federal tax credits by providing free tax preparation services. 

Volunteers are asked to donate two (2) to four (4) hours of their time each week to assist in preparing tax returns for eligible residents.

Certified Volunteers Responsibilities:

1.  The volunteer tax preparer must successfully complete the IRS Volunteer Certification process.  The volunteer tax preparer should be certified up to the Intermediate level as defined by the IRS.

2.  Will receive tax preparation software training.

3.  Certified volunteer tax preparers will prepare Federal and State Income Returns for the tax years 2009, 2010 and 2011.

4.  The volunteer tax preparer will be responsible for conducting a quality review on each return prepared to be followed by a similar review by the site coordinator.

Non-certified Volunteers Responsibilities

1.  Will be trained on the basic tax law.  Non-certified volunteers are not required to take the IRS certification Exam.

2.  Will receive some  tax preparation software training ( e.g. how to look up the status of a return)

3.  Act as the liaison for the between the tax preparers and the taxpayer by coping the required documents need in order to prepare the returns, answer questions on the status of the tax returns, and  making  appointments.

Training

All training will be at One-Stop Employment Center, 120 Bloomingdale Rd. in White Plains.

1.   Returning Volunteers Only

Classes will be held on January 14, 2012 and January 21, 2012.  Both classes will be held from 2:00 to 4:00 pm.   We will discuss the following:

1. New Tax laws
2. Tax preparation software changes and updates
3. IRS Certification Exam

2.  New Volunteers (returning volunteers may also attend)

Classes will be held class on January 14, 21 or 28 from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm and 1:00 am to 4:00 pm. We will discuss the following:

1.  Federal and State tax laws
2.  How to navigate the Tax preparation software
3.  IRS Certification Exam
